LÉON BRUNSCHVICG
Rare Autograph Letter of the French philosopher.
Rare ALS: "L Brunschvicg", 2p, 8¼x10½, front and verso. No place,
1921 July 8. To a friend. In French, not translated. French philosopher
Léon Brunschvicg (1869-1944) was a noted French philosopher who used
mathematical judgment to extend the teachings of Kant, Hegal, Plato, Descartes,
Spinoza and Pascal. Brunschvicg, who influenced modern European thought with
his brand of "critical idealism", had become a Professor of Philosophy at
the Sorbonne in 1909, but he was forced to leave his position by the Nazis.
After fleeing to southern France, Brunschvicg wrote a number of studies
on Montaigne, Descartes and Pascal that were printed in Switzerland.
Brunschvicg, who defined philosophy as "the mind's methodical self-reflection",
also wrote Héritage de Mots, Héritage d'Idées (Legacy of Words, Legacy
of Ideas), a posthumously published work that he had dedicated to his
granddaughter. Lightly creased with folds, not at signature. Chipped at upper
and lower edges, upper left blank corner torn away. Nailhead-size hole has been
inexpertly repaired with tape, nicking one letter of writing. Paper scuffed at
salutation line, removing three words. Minor stains. Pencil notes (unknown hand
at upper left margin and to right of salutation line. Overall, fine
condition.
