LEON ERROL
Vintage photo in tie and checked suit, inscribed in person to collector Saul Goodman
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Saul/best always/Leon Errol". B/w, 8x10. Collector's ink stamp on verso dates signature: January 12, 1937. Leon Errol (1881-1951, born Leonce Errol Simms in Sydney, Australia), a medical student who got sidetracked into variety shows at his alma mater, performed in circuses and burlesques and even some Shakespeare before emigrating to the US in 1905. Errol had a long resume with roles in over 160 movies between 1921 and 1951 and 21 Broadway productions between 1911 and 1929, including five incarnations of Ziegfeld Follies between 1911 and 1915 and Ziegfeld Midnight Frolic (1921-1922, 123 performances). Errol is probably best known for his two-reel comedies with RKO Radio Pictures, in which he often played a henpecked husband. Saul Goodman (1919-2003), a New York business man by day, pursued his love of film and theatre in the evening, making friends with many celebrities. While other autograph seekers offered album leaves, Goodman presented stars with snazzy photographs, a rarity then, to sign in fountain pen. Scattered creases and surface marks. Scattered light toning to image and background. Otherwise, fine condition.
