LEON JAWORSKI. Signature: "Leon Jaworski", 3x5 card. On November 5, 1973, Texas attorney Jaworski was appointed Special Watergate Prosecutor, replacing Archibald Cox. Jaworski's appointment followed the October 20, 1973 "Saturday Night Massacre" in which President Richard M. Nixon attempted to abolish the Office of the Special Prosecutor, eventually ousting Cox. Instead of quashing the Watergate scandal, pressure for Nixon's impeachment mounted in Congress. Nixon responded with Jaworski's appointment and guaranteed that the new Special Prosecutor would be free of White House control. On April 16, 1974 Jaworski issued a subpoena for 64 White House tapes. Nixon refused to honor the subpoena and Jaworski took the issue to the U.S. Supreme Court. On July 24, 1974 the Supreme Court ordered Nixon to hand over the Watergate tapes to Jaworski; Nixon complied. Jaworski died in 1982 at the age of 77. Pinhead-size ink mark. Fine condition.
