Autograph Note in French, signed by him in Paris in 1916
Autograph Note signed (in French): "Le voici et avec/plaisir!/Leon Bakst/5 Sep 1916 Paris", 3¼x2¾. Translation: "Here it is, and with pleasure!" Leon Nikolayevich Bakst (1866-1924), born Lev Samoilivich Rosenberg, changed his name because he considered his Jewish ancestry too much of a business liability in his native Russia. He was closely associated with the movement of young Russian artists led by Sergei Diaghilev. Despite receiving commissions from Tsar Nicholas II and being elected to the Imperial Academy, he moved to Paris in part because he could not live permanently outside the Pale while in Russia. Originally famed for his portraits and other paintings, he focused on costume and set design in Paris, producing many sets for the Ballets Russes. Bakst was also an art teacher; one of his young students (1908-1910) was Marc Chagall. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
