LEON URIS The epic novelist sent this note helping to identify people in a photo Autograph Letter signed: "Leon Uris" in black ink, 1p, 4x6. Aspen, Colorado, no date. On memo page imprinted with his name and address to "Dear Alan". In full: "I think you could do with an up-date - the other is 21 years old. Man on left is Joe Rosenthal who took the famous picture in background/ Best wishes". Joe Rosenthal (1911-2006) was the Associated Press photographer who took the Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph of the raising of the U.S. flag on Mount Suribachi, Iwo Jima on February 23, 1945. Rosenthal also photographed WWII invasions in New Guinea and Guam. In a career spanning four decades, Leon Uris (1924-2003) wrote eleven epic novels, including Exodus (1958), Topaz (1967), QB VII (1970), Trinity (1976), and Redemption (1995). His large-scale, action-filled works often depict courageous individuals caught up in major events of modern history. Before Uris became a novelist, he was a member of the United States Marine Corps, enlisting soon after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He served in the South Pacific from 1942-1945. Lightly creased. Remnants of pad adhesive at upper edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
