LEONARD BERNSTEIN. First Day Cover signed: "Leonard
Bernstein", 6½x3½. FDC honoring George Gershwin, 8-cent stamp affixed,
postmarked Beverly Hills, CA, February 28, 1973, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE.
Metal Gershwin cachet affixed at left margin. LEONARD BERNSTEIN (1918-1990)
and GEORGE GERSHWIN (1898-1937) have often been called America's greatest
composers and/or the greatest influences on American music. Bernstein
acknowledged that Gershwin was perhaps the "greatest melodist since Schumann",
and Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue strongly influenced Bernstein.
Bernstein's On the Waterfront score, the ballet sequence in his West
Side Story and the entirety of his Mass are both symphonic and
jazz-like, the same characteristics found in Gershwin's music. Lightly
creased. Slightly soiled. Fine condition.
