In the year this postcard was copyrighted, Bernstein wrote the music and Alan Jay Lerner wrote the lyrics for the Broadway musical, 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, and Bernstein also published a book, The Unanswered Question. Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990) rose to fame as the conductor of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra (1958-1969). The varied works of the versatile composer, conductor and pianist include the musicals On the Town (1944) and West Side Story (1957). His symphonies include The Age of Anxiety (1949) and Mass (commissioned by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis for the opening of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. in 1971). Bernstein also received an Academy Award for his score for On the Waterfront (1954). Postal impressions, likely from postcard being mailed in an envelope, at upper left background (not evident head on). Fine condition.
