LEONARD PENNARIO
1956-57 Community Concert Association program signed by Pennario
Program signed "L Pennario". 4 pages, 6¼x9¼, 1 sheet folded, front and verso. 1956-57 program from Community Concert Association (affiliated with Columbia Arists Management, New York City) for a Pennario concert, with short bio on last page. Pennario, He made his debut at with New York Philharmonic at Carnegie Hall in 1943 while serving in the United States Army Air Force entertaining troops. However, he first made himself known with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra at age 12; his playing had come to the attention of conductor of Eugene Goossens, and Pennario performed as soloist when the scheduled pianist fell ill. He told Goossens that he knew the concerto to be played, Edvard Gried's Piano Concerto, when in fact he hadn't even heard of it, but he made up for it by learning it in a week. He recorded over 60 albums, mostly of Chopin and later composers, and formed a celebrated trio with violinist Jascha Heifetz and cellist Gregor Piatigorsky in the 1960s. He was also the second pianist to record all four of Sergei Rachmaninoff's four piano concertos; Rachmaninoff was the first. Pennario retired from performance and recording in the 1990s. Lightly toned and creased. Small piece torn out of upper right corner. Light tear on left edge. Folded once and unfolded. Rust stain from paper clip along fold. Otherwise in fine condition.
