The pages are mostly covered, three columns per page, with newspaper clippings collected by Leonard Volk and affixed to pages with mounting adhesive. Other printed documents include a Prospectus for the Chicago Academy of Design (1881), a coin collector's manual, and the program for a 7 Act play about Abraham Lincoln, performed in Chicago in 1891. American sculptor LEONARD VOLK (1828-1895), who studied in Rome with the help of Illinois political figure Stephen A. Douglas, opened a studio in Chicago in 1959. Closely observing Douglas and his rival, Abraham Lincoln, during their debates, he sculpted both men and did Lincoln's life mask and made casts of both of his hands. Volk's monument to Douglas stands in Chicago and statues of Douglas and Lincoln grace the state Capitol in Springfield, Illinois. The sculptor also did portrait busts of Lincoln and a number of other subjects, including Henry Clay. His son STEPHEN A. DOUGLAS VOLK (1856-1935) was named after Senator Stephen A. Douglas and became a renowned portrait painter. Senator STEPHEN A. DOUGLAS (1813-1861) represented Illinois in Congress from 1843-1847 and was U.S. Senator from 1847 to his death in 1861. He was one of Mary Todd's suitors but she chose Lincoln to marry "because he had the best chance of becoming President of the United States". Todd and Lincoln married on November 4, 1842, 16 months prior to this note. Douglas defeated Abraham Lincoln for the U.S. Senate in 1858 after a series of debates across the state and was defeated by Lincoln for the presidency in 1860 receiving 12 electoral votes to Lincoln's 180. Lightly worn. Front cover has come separated from binding. Ink on a second label on spine is no longer legible. Mounting adhesive shows through lightly at some pages. Chicago Academy of Design amended Constitution for Free Art Schools and Galleries in 1882 affixed. Otherwise, fine condition.
