LEONARD WARREN
Program for his concert performance of operatic and popular tunes, signed on front cover
Program signed: "Leonard Warren", 4 pages (integral leaf), 6x9. Concert given at the Sacramento Memorial Auditorium, March 4, 1953, with piano accompaniment by Willard Sektberg. Leonard Warren (1911-1960) was hired for the chorus at Radio City Music Hall in 1935. Untutored in opera, he won the Metropolitan Opera's Audition of the Air in 1938, and was rewarded with a contract and a stipend for voice lessons in Italy. He was a regular on the Met stage from 1939 until his death, singing many parts but particularly acclaimed for his interpretations of Verdi. He sang the part of Iago in Verdi's Otello in the first "live from the Met" broadcast on television (1948). He died on stage at the Met on March 1, 1960, while singing the title role in Simon Boccanegra. The last words he sang (in Italian) before dropping dead translate as, "To die, a momentous thing!" Fine condition.
