LEO CARDENAS
Shown in Twins uniform with his bat on his shoulder, signing with an (incorrect) list of his All-Star appearances
Photograph signed: "Leo Cardenas #17/1 - AL All Star -/1969 - 1970 - 1971 -/Minnesota Twins". Color, 8x10¼. Leonardo Lazaro "Leo" Cardenas, born in Cuba in 1938, played shortstop for Cincinnati (1960-1968) and Minnesota (1969-1971), appearing in the 1961 World Series with the Reds, and in the 1968 and 1969 ALCS for the Twins. He finished his Major League career with two seasons each for Cleveland and Texas. His name apparently honors Lazaro Cardenas, Mexico's President from 1934 to 1940. Surprisingly, Cardenas has misstated his All-Star appearances. He actually appeared five times while with Cincinnati (1964-1966, 1968) and only once in a Twins uniform (1971). In 1960, Cardenas' Havana Sugar Kings of the International League were playing a home game when supporters of Fidel Castro exuberantly fired off rifles at the game. Cardenas and another player were injured, and the team moved to Jersey City for the rest of the season. Left and bottom edges lightly frayed. Otherwise, fine condition.
