LEONE LEVI
The jurist and statistician pens a note to an associate, discussing a meeting with Parliament, and what shall be said during the meeting. A rare signature!
Autograph letter signed: "Leon Levi", 4½x7¼, 1 page. January 4, 1870. Temple. In full: "My dear Pa, I have just received a note from M.J.B. Smith, M.D. regarding his intention to be at our meeting tomorrow and I earnestly hope you will endeavor to be with us. We have to decide what comes in Smiths talk in Parliament. I remain Dearly Yours faithfully". Leon Levi (1821-1888) was a jurist and statistician of Jewish descent. An advocate of chambers of commerce, Levi promoted the establishment of chambers through various pamphlets and media, eventually leading to the creating of the Liverpool Chamber of Commerce, which Levi was made a secretary for. Levi was also an educator, appointed to the chair of commercial law at King's College London. His work at the college made him a favorite among his peers, and helped to innovate evening classes. Beyond his work as a statistician, he was called to the bar at Lincoln's Inn in 1859, and received a doctorate for political science from the University of Tübingen. Levi authored several books relating to his expertise, including History of British Commerce and of the Economic Progress of the British Nation, Work and Pay; Wages and Earnings of the Working Classes, and Commercial Law of the World, which still remain important pieces of writing today. Normal mailing folds. Small stain near date. Slightly toned. Fine condition.
