LEONTYNE PRICE
Black and white publicity photograph of Leontyne Price wearing a black
stole.
Photograph signed: "Sincerely/Leontyne/Price". B/w, 6½x9 glued to a
piece of cardboard of the same size. Soprano Leonytne Price (born Mary Violet
Leontine Price in 1927) was best known for singing the title role in
Aïda. Price, who attended the Juilliard School of Music, made her
Broadway debut in Porgy and Bess in 1952 and three years later
became the first Black American singer to appear in a television production
of an opera (Tosca). Price made her debut with the San Francisco
Opera in 1957, the year she first sang Aida. After debuting in Venice
(1958), London (1958) and at La Scala (1960), she sang her first performance
with New York's Metropolitan Opera, which remained her primary base until
her retirement in 1985. Price, who also made a number of recordings, married
concert singer William Warfield in 1952 (the couple separated in 1959 and
divorced in 1972). Lightly creased at corners. Rippled from being glued down.
Otherwise, fine condition.
