Check signed: "Leopold Stokowski", 8¼x3. Beverly Hills, California, 1943 September 16. Check #874, drawn on his personal account at the Bank of America, payable to Otto Rothschild for $5.13. London-born LEOPOLD STOKOWSKI (1882-1977) conducted the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra (1909-1912), Philadelphia Orchestra (1914-1936), N.Y. Symphony Orchestra (1944-1945) and Houston Symphony (1955-1962). He formed the American Symphony Orchestra in 1962. He was known for his lush interpretations of the classics and it was under his baton that the orchestra played the music for Disney's Fantasia (1940). He was known as a champion of new composer. Stokowski, who had made his conducting debut in 1909, made his last recording in 1977, only months before his death. Otto Rothschild was the official photographer for the Hollywood Bowl and the Los Angeles Music Center, where his collection of over 50,000 photos from the 1930s to the 1970s is now housed.
