Stokowski signed this typed letter from the Rice Hotel in Houston, Texas in 1956, apologizing because he can't meet the recipient. With original mailing envelope.
Typed letter signed "Leopold Stokowski". 1 page, 8½x10¾. Rice Hotel, Houston, Texas, April 3, 1956. Addressed to Mr. Erno Balogh, New York City. In full: "Dear Mr. Balogh: I am sorry that April 14th will be impossible for me on account of other committments [sic]. Thank you all the same. Sincerely, Leopold Stokowski". Lightly toned, and creased. Folded once horizontally and twice vertically and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition. Accompanied by: Original mailing envelope. Postmarked Houtson, Texas, April 3, 1956. Addressed to Mr. Erno Balogh, New York City. With one 6¢ red-and-pink air mail stamp affixed. Lightly toned, soiled and creased. Typewritten address is lightly smeared in places, but legible. Envelope was neatly cut open at top edge. Otherwise in fine condition. Stokowski (1882-1977, born Leopold Antoni Stanislaw Boleslawawicz Stokowski in London England) conducted the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra (1909-1912), Philadelphia Orchestra (1914-1936), N.Y. Symphony Orchestra (1944-1945) and Houston Symphony (1955-1962). He formed the American Symphony Orchestra in 1962. He was known for his lush interpretations of the classics and it was under his baton that the orchestra played the music for Disney's Fantasia (1940).
