LEOPOLD STOKOWSKI
Stokowski signed this typed letter in 1926 on Philadelphia Orchestra letterhead regarding an insincere fan of the Orchestra.
Typed letter signed "Leopold Stokowski". 1 page, 7¼x9¼, on Philadelphia Orchestra letterhead with Stokowski as conductor. April 29, 1926. In full: "Dear Mrs. Holding: Thank you so much for your kind and at the same time amusing letter. It interested me to learn about the person of whom you write because she always professes such devotion to the Orchestra, and now I know how little sincere she is. I hope you will continue to find pleasure in the concerts of our Orchestra, and I shall do my utmost to make them as fine as I possibly can. Yours sincerely, LEOPOLD STOKOWSKI". Stokowski (1882-1977, born Leopold Antoni Stanislaw Boleslawawicz Stokowski in London England) conducted the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra (1909-1912), Philadelphia Orchestra (1914-1936), N.Y. Symphony Orchestra (1944-1945) and Houston Symphony (1955-1962). He formed the American Symphony Orchestra in 1962. He was known for his lush interpretations of the classics and it was under his baton that the orchestra played the music for Disney's Fantasia (1940). Lightly toned, creased and rippled. Signature is lightly smeared in places, but legible. Letter has been cut from a larger sheet at left and bottom edges; bottom edge is irregular. Folded once horizontally and thrice vertically and unfolded. Lightly torn at bottom edge along right fold. Otherwise in fine condition.
