LEROY NEIMAN and LARRY HOLMES
22x28 poster for the Holmes - Cooney fight (1982), in Neiman's characteristic artwork,
signed by both Neiman and Holmes
Poster signed: "Leroy Neiman", "Larry Holmes". Color, 22x28. Poster for the WBC World
Heavyweight Championship fight between Larry Holmes and Gerry Cooney, Caesar's Palace,
Las Vegas, March 15, 1982. Illustrator and printmaker LeRoy Neiman (1921-2012) is
internationally known for his brilliantly colored, energetic illustrations of sporting events,
leisure activities and celebrities, but he also produced works on historical figures and
famous locations. Neiman featured Paris and its sights in a number of works. The Eiffel
Tower, for example, was later featured in a serigraph in 1994, the year the artist published An
American in Paris, a collection of illustrations from his visit to the city in 1991-1992. LARRY
HOLMES, born in Cuthbert, Georgia in 1949, was heavyweight champion (WBC or IBF)
from 1978 to 1985. His winning championship bouts included wins over Ken Norton
(1978), Muhammad Ali (1980) and Leon Spinks (1981), as well as Gerry Cooney! He
bested Cooney in a 13-round TKO. He successfully defended his title 20 times before
losing to Michael Spinks. Holmes came out of retirement four times, losing to Mike Tyson,
Evander Holyfield, and Oliver McCall before winning his last fight against Eric "Butterbean"
Esch in 2002. He has a pro record of 69-6 and 44 KOs. Fine condition.
