LESLIE CHARTERIS
The author responds to a collector's request for autographs in
1968.
Typed letter signed: "Leslie Charteris", 1p, 5½x8½.
Lantana, Florida, 1968 December 16. On imprinted letterhead to "Dear
Major Espy". In full: "Your letter of October 24 reached me
recently in Europe, where I was travelling, after various forwardings. The
important one was made by my accountant, Mr Joseph P Wrenn, at the address which
you used in California, who opened your letter and enclosed it with other
correspondence. However, the signed first day cover which you refer to was not
enclosed. I therefore wrote to him and asked what had happened to it. I have
only now received from him a denial that this cover was ever received in his
office. I can only say that I am very distressed about this, and profoundly hope
that you have since discovered that you yourself forgot to enclose the cover
with your letter. If however you are still certain that you did send it, I can
only ask you to take the matter up direct with Mr Wrenn at 8845 West Olympic
Blvd, Beverly Hills, since there is nothing more that I can do. Meanwhile I
enclose the autographed card and photograph which you asked for. Sincerely".
Enclosures not present. Leslie Charteris (1908-1993) wrote his first "Saint"
novel, Meet the Tiger (also published as Crooked Gold and The
Saint Meets the Tiger) in 1928, a year after the Singapore-born writer
legally changed his name from Leslie Charles Boyer Yin. Not only was his Simon
Templar character the hero of Charteris' novels, novelettes and books of short
stories, "The Saint" also appeared in detective magazines (including "The Saint
Mystery Magazine"), on radio (voiced by Vincent Price) and television, in films
(many scripted by Charteris) and in comic strips. Often compared to James
Bond, Charteris' Saint predates the Ian Fleming character by decades.
Slightly creased with folds, not at signature. Fine
condition.
