London-born Leslie Howard (1893-1943) was nominated for the 1934 Academy Award for Best Actor for the role of Peter Standish in Berkeley Square and in 1939 for portraying Professor Henry Higgins in Pygmalion. Among his other notable parts were Ashley Wilkes in Gone With the Wind (1939), Sir Percy Blakeney in The Scarlet Pimpernel (1934), Romeo in Romeo and Juliet (1936) and Holger Brandt in Intermezzo (1939). Howard, who also gave a memorable performance in The Petrified Forest (1936), was only 50 when he died in 1943 when the British Overseas Airways plane on which he was flying was shot down by German fighters over the Bay of Biscay. The German planes were reportedly after Winston Churchill, to whom Howard's business manager and traveling companion Alfred Chenhalls bore a strong resemblance. Lightly creased, not at signature. Bisected by a vertical fold. ¾x½ portion of upper right corner torn away, touching the last letter of the manager's signature. Overall, fine condition.
