LESLIE PHILLIPS
Small b/w half-view of Phillips in a leather jacket and smoking a
cigarette, signed "Best wishes" by him in blue ink
Inscribed photograph signed "Best/wishes Pam!/Leslie Phillips"
and "Many thanks for/your letter-/[illegible]/'THE MAN MOST LIKELY
TO...'" on verso, both in blue ink. With pencil notations on verso in unknown
hand. B/w, 5½x3¼ overall, 4¼x3¼ image, one surface. Phillips, born in
London, England in 1924, is a character actor of stage and screen who
specializes in upper-crust characters, despite being born into poverty in real
life. His father died when he was young, but he managed to get rid of his
lower-class accent, then considered an impediment for an actor, and became his
family's breadwinner at 14. Harry Potter fans may recognize his voice as that
of the Sorting Hat from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. In all, Phillips has
almost 150 films and TV shows to his credit, as of this biography, since
1936. Lightly bowed. Handwriting and signatures are lightly smeared, but
legible. Impressions from writing on verso on image (not visible head-on and do
not touch signature). Otherwise in fine condition.
