LEW AYRES
The actor is shown with Barbara Stanwyck in a scene from a 1968 episode of the The Big Valley in this signed black and white photograph
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To John Augworthy / Best wishes / Lew Ayres 1981 / Photo 1968!". B/w, 7x9¼. Shown with Barbara Stanwyck in a 1968 episode of the TV series The Big Valley. Lew Ayres (1908-1996) starred opposite Greta Garbo in one of the last silent films, The Kiss (1929), and then starred in the 1930 Oscar-winning talking film, All Quiet on the Western Front. A leading man through the 1940s, he earned an Oscar nomination for Best Actor in Johnny Belinda (1948). He starred as Dr. Kildare in a series of feature films, but refused to play the role on television because cigarettes were to be advertised on the program. Misidentified as a conscientious objector because of his desire to serve as a combat medic, Ayers was temporarily blacklisted in Hollywood during World War II. He remained active in movie and television character roles through the 1980s, but he never achieved the same level of popularity he had in the period just before WWII. In 1982, Ayres guest-starred on episodes of Knots Landing, Trapper John, M.D. and Little House on the Prairie. The actor was awarded a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960. Lightly creased in lower left corner. Otherwise, fine condition.
