Photograph signed: "Best wishes/Lew Ayres/1979/Photo 1940". B/w, 10x8. Still from one of the nine films (1938-1942) in which Ayres starred as Dr. James "Jimmy" Kildare. Typed caption on verso: "Lew Ayres and Laraine Day in the elevator sequence for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's 'Should Dr. Kildare Tell?' with Lionel Barrymore and Robert Young, directed by Harold S. Bacquet." The film's name has been crossed off and "Dr. K's Crisis" has been written in pencil (unknown hand) at upper margin. Dr. Kildare's Crisis was also released in 1940 and also co-starred Laraine Day. In 1979, Ayres appeared in two made-for-TV movies, Salem's Lot and Letters from Frank. Lew Ayres (1908-1996) starred opposite Greta Garbo in one of the last silent films, The Kiss (1929). A leading man through the 1940s, he earned an Oscar nomination for Best Actor in Johnny Belinda (1948). Ayers remained active in movie and TV character roles through the 1980s. Slightly creased at blank margins and corners. Minor surface creases (not evident head on). Ink and pencil notes (unknown hands) on verso, which also bears an approval stamp from the Advertising Advisory Council (no show through). Fine condition.
