Photograph signed: "Lew Ayres 1981/Photo 1946". B/w, 8x10. ©1946, Universal Pictures Co. Captioned at lower margin. At the time this photograph was taken, Lew Ayres (1908-1996) had just resumed his career following WWII, appearing in The Dark Mirror in 1946. Riding on a crest of popularity as the star of nine Dr. Kildare films for MGM, Ayres was dropped by the studio after he declared himself a conscientious objector and refused to bear weapons when called to serve in WWII. After the public learned of his bravery under fire while serving as a non-combatant medical corpsman, Ayres was permitted to resume the career. Ayres first achieved film stardom opposite Greta Garbo in one of the last silent films, The Kiss (1929), then starred in 1930's Oscar-winning talking film, All Quiet on the Western Front. He would later earn an Oscar nomination for Best Actor in Johnny Belinda (1948). He remained active in movie and TV character roles through the 1980s. Slightly soiled in margins. Otherwise, fine condition.
