LEW STONE BAND: ALAN KANE, ALFIE NOAKES, JOE FERRIE, JOE CROSSMAN and HARRY BERLY
Album leaf signed by 5 members of the band from the mid-1930s
Signatures: "Harry Berly", "Alan Kane", "Alfie Noakes", "Joe Crossman" and "Joe Ferrie",3x4¼ album leaf. Ink caption (unknown hand) at lower edge: "Members of Lew Stones Band." Lew Stone (1898-1969) led a series of British big bands from the early 1930s to the early 1960s, peaking in popularity in the 1930s and World War II. At its peak, the band played to crowded dance floors at a series of London night spots and recorded for Decca. The five signers of this sheet were members in the mid-1930s, with ALAN KANE as lead vocalist, ALFIE NOAKES on trumpet, JOE FERRIE on trombone, and JOE CROSSMAN and HARRY BERLY in the reed section. Ferrie and Crossman helped out on vocals. The band, which received praise for its covers of most of the popular big band repertoire, is particularly remembered for its sentimental ballads. The Lew Stone Band may be heard on a 2002 re-issue, Dinner and Dance. Top edge ragged from previous mounting. Soiled and lightly creased.
