Signature of the Michigan Democrat on a small card
Signature: "Lewis Cass", 3½x¾ affixed to 3½x2 card. Lewis Cass (1786-1866) was Governor of the Michigan Territory (1813-1831), and later represented Michigan in the US Senate (1845-1848, 1849-1857). He was the Democratic candidate for President in 1848, running on a platform of Popular Sovereignty (which would have left to each state the decision on whether to allow slavery there). When he lost to Whig Zachary Taylor, he became the first non-incumbent Democrat to lose a Presidential election. Cass was Secretary of War under President Jackson (1831-1836) and Secretary of State under President James Buchanan (1857-1860). Although previously considered a "dough face" (a northern Democrat sympathetic to the South), he resigned in 1860 to protest Buchanan's weak stand on the issue of southern secession. Signature lightly soiled from mounting, irregular top edge. Pencil note at lower blank margin of card (unknown hand).
