In preparation of his New Guinea expedition, the American explorer sends a thank you letter to journalist Louis Sobol in 1958. A rare signature!
Typed letter signed: "Lewis Cotlow", in blue ink, 1 page, 7¼x10½. July 22, 1958, New York City, New York. On his personal letterhead to "Dear Louis Sobol" New York City, in full: "I have heard from many people who read your fine writeup about me in last Friday's column. I very much appreciate the interesting and colorful manner in which you treated the information I gave you about myself and my forthcoming trip to New Guinea. With kindest personal regards, I am Sincerely yours,". Explorer Lewis Cotlow (1898-1967) travelled Africa, South America, Indonesia and the Arctic on photographic expeditions between the 1930s and 1950s. From his studies he produced several documentaries, such as Upper Amazon and High Andes Adventure (1941) and Savage Splendor (1949). His books Passport to Adventure (1942) and Amazon Head-Hunters (1953) remain some of his most popular reads. However, he is most known for his book and film Zanzabuku: Dangerous Safari (1956). Journalist Louis Sobol was a New York City columnist for years. While he dealt with a variety of subjects, he is best known as a Broadway and film critic. Normal mailing folds. Pencil notes (unknown hand) at lower margin. Lightly creased and soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
