LEWIS GAYLORD CLARK
The magazine editor and New York state native signed this handwritten letter
and sent it to Mrs. Embury in 1935
Autograph Letter Signed: "Lewis Gaylord Clark" in ink. 5x8. Dated June 12,
1935. Sent to Emma C. Embury, an American author herself who was regularly
published in the New York Mirror. In Full: "Have you foresworn the Muses, who
have always treated you with such marked favor? If not, will you oblige us by making our
readers occasionally aware of the fact? The number for this month, enclosed, has some clever
papers, and several articles of verse, that I think you will find worthy of perusal. With sincere
regard, Very Truly Yours". Lewis Gaylord Clark (1808-1873) was an author who
served as chief editor and publisher of The Knickerbocker, a literary
magazine based in New York. He turned the magazine into an influential force
in the American consciousness, with the help of significant contributions from
famous writers including Washington Irving and Henry Wadsworth
Longfellow, among many others. Clark served as editor from 1834-1861, and
the magazine itself outlasted him by just four years. Mailing creases. Minor
smudging on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
