Typed Letter signed: “Lewis H. Sarett” in black ink, 1p, 8½x11. 1977 February 11. To “Dear
Mr. Stanhope”. In full: “In response to your request, I am happy to add my autograph to your
collection and am flattered to be included in such noble company./ With best wishes./ Sincerely”.
Lewis Hastings Sarett (1917-1999) was an organic chemist. He received his bachelor's
degree from Northwestern and then went on to receive a Ph.D. from Princeton. Sarett then
began working for Merck & Co. He invented a Process of Treating Pregnene Compounds
Cortisone, and received a patent for his invention (Patent Number 2,462,133). He has
won several awards including the 1972 Chemical Pioneer Award from the American
Institute of Chemists and the 1975 National Medal of Science. Two horizontal mailing
folds. Corners and edge gently worn. Lower left-hand corner creased. Otherwise, fine
condition.
