LIBELED LADY MOVIE CAST: SPENCER TRACY and WILLIAM POWELL
The two leading men are shown with co-stars Myrna Loy and Jean Harlow.
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To/Sanford/Spencer/Tracy", "William Powell". Movie still from Libeled Lady (1936). In this screwball comedy, Loy sues Tracy, delaying Tracy's marriage to Harlow. Tracy hires Powell to carry out a scheme to resolve everything, but of course nothing turns out as expected. Cast as a villain or at least a tough guy in his early films, SPENCER TRACY (1900-1967) earned recognition as one of Hollywood's greatest stars after he won Oscar in successive years for Captains Courageous (1937) and Boys Town (1939). He would receive seven more Oscar nominations for San Francisco (1936), Father of the Bride (1950), Bad Day at Black Rock (1955), The Old Man and the Sea (1958), Inherit the Wind (1960), Judgment at Nuremberg (1961) and Guess Who's Coming to Dinner? (1967). For 25 years, from 1942 until his death, Tracy was linked romantically on and off screen with actress Katharine Hepburn, though they never married due to the Catholic Tracy's aversion to divorce. Often cast as a villain in silent film, WILLIAM POWELL (1892-1984) became a sophisticated leading man in romantic comedies and light detective fare in the talkie era. His career got a great boost from his pairing with Myrna Loy as husband and wife detectives Nick and Nora Charles in The Thin Man (1934) and six sequels. (He made seven other films with Loy.) Though he never won an Oscar, Powell was nominated three times as Best Actor (for The Thin Man; My Man Godfrey,1936; and Life With Father (1947). Evenly toned. Light corner creases. Overall, fine condition.
