The 1930s leading lady signs 7¼x9 sepia photograph in black
ink
Inscribed photograph signed: "To/ Harry Wilkerson/ Best of Wishes/
Lila Lee/ 1940" in black ink. Sepia, 7¼x9. Lila Lee (1901-1973) was
brought to Hollywood in 1918 by Jesse Lasky. Her first film was The
Cruise of the Make Believe followed by Cecil B. deMille's Male and
Female in 1919. She costarred with Rudolph Valentino in Blood and
Sand (1922) and with Lon Chaney (Sr.) in The Unholy Three (1930).
Highly publicized illnesses resulted in fewer offers. Lee appeared in only three
movies after 1937 and a few television appearances in the 1950s. Her son,
James Kirkwood, won the 1976 Pulitzer Prize in Drama for writing A Chorus
Line. Slightly soiled. Toned. Ink stamps on verso. Stickers affixed on
verso. Mounting residue on verso. Corners and edges rounded. Otherwise, fine
condition.
