Typed Letter signed: "Lila Lee", 1p, 7¼x10½. No place, no date. On personal letterhead to
"Dear Thelma". In full: "I'm sorry to have delayed answering your letter for such a long time. It
got tucked away in the bottom of a drawer, and I didn't find it until now. I was born in New
York City on July 25. I have not only been in Elyria, but in your own town, Lorain. Lon Chaney
was a great artist and I certainly did enjoy working with him. Thank you for your good wishes
concerning my health. I am much better and expect to resume work soon. Sincerely." Lila Lee
(1901-1973) was brought to Hollywood in 1918 by Jesse Lasky. Her first film was The
Cruise of the Make Believe followed by Cecil B. deMille's Male and Female in 1919. She
costarred with Rudolph Valentino in Blood and Sand (1922) and with Lon Chaney Sr. in
The Unholy Three (1930). Highly publicized illnesses resulted in fewer offers. Lee appeared
in only three movies after 1937 and a few television appearances in the 1950s. Her son, James
Kirkwood, won the 1976 Pulitzer Prize in Drama for writing A Chorus Line. Horizontal
and vertical folds, one of the latter crossing "la" of "Lila". Otherwise, fine condition.
