LILLIAN GISH, JAMES STEWART and DOUGLAS FAIRBANKS, JR
Lillian Gish, James Stewart and Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. sign a first day cover honoring the 50th Anniversary of Motion Pictures.
First Day Cover signed: "Lillian Gish:", "James Stewart" and "Douglas Fairbanks Jr.", 6½x3¾. First Day Cover honoring the 50th Anniversary of Motion Pictures, 3-cent stamp affixed, postmarked Los Angeles, California, October 31, 1944, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE/HOLLYWOOD STATION. LILLIAN GISH (1896-1993), born Lillian de Guiche, began her career as child actress "Baby Lillian" at the age of five. Lillian and her sister, Dorothy (1898-1968), who often toured with Lillian, made their film debuts (along with their mother, Mary Gish) in D.W. Griffith's film, An Unseen Enemy in 1912. Over the next several years, Lillian, who is credited as being the first true actress for recognizing the crucial differences between stage and film work and delivering carefully crafted performances, would make a number of films for Griffith, including The Birth of a Nation (1915), Intolerance (1916), Way Down East (1920) and Orphans of the Storm (1922). In 1923, she went to MGM, where she made La Boheme and The Scarlet Letter (both 1926). In 1930, Gish appeared in her first sound film, One Romantic Night (1930). Lillian, who was known as "The First Lady of the Silent Screen", was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for Duel in The Sun (1946) and received an honorary Oscar in 1970 for her contributions to film. JAMES "JIMMY" STEWART (1908-1997) starred in more recognized masterpieces of the American cinema than any other actor. In 1940, he won the Best Actor Academy Award for The Philadelphia Story, and he was nominated for Oscars in the same category for Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939), It's A Wonderful Life (1946), Harvey (1950) and Anatomy of a Murder (1959). Stewart, who was awarded an Honorary Academy Award in 1984, also appeared in You Can't Take It With You, Destry Rides Again, Winchester 73, Rear Window, The Glenn Miller Story, The Greatest Show on Earth and a long list of other features. DOUGLAS FAIRBANKS, JR. (1909-2000), the son of the dashing actor of the 1920s and Anna Beth Sully, the daughter of an industrialist, was raised by his mother after his parents' divorce in 1918. At the age of 13, he starred in Lasky's Stephen Steps Out, an unsuccessful attempt to exploit the Fairbanks name. Although the younger Fairbanks, a movie producer as well as an actor, appeared in some 75 films, his father took little interest in his son's career, and the two did not become close friends until the early 1930s. His feature films included Stella Dallas (1926), Little Caesar (1930), The Prisoner of Zenda (1937), Gunga Din (1939) and Sinbad the Sailor (1947), and Fairbanks also appeared in a number of made-for-TV movies and hosted the anthology series, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. Presents (1952-1955). In the 1930s, he was married to actress Joan Crawford. Lightly rippled, touching the "Ja" of James in Stewart's signature. Soiled and yellowed. Overall, fine condition.
