LILLIAN RUSSELL
Russell handwrote and signed this letter to a Mr. Wagner on her monogrammed stationery. In it, she tells Wagner to thank a Mr. Punes for sending her candy and when she'll be available to meet them both.
Autograph letter signed "Lillian Russell". With pencil notations in upper right corner in unknown hand. 3 pages, 4¾x6¼, 1 sheet folded, front on verso, on Russell's fabric-textured monogrammed stationery with white border. Dated "Tuesday". Addressed to "Mr. Wagner." In full: "Dear Mr. Wagner. Please thank Mr. Punes for the candy and tell him that I am awfully sorry I was out when you called Jesse told me he would call but did not say when. I will be in on Thursday afternoon at four when I shall hope to see you both You will pardon my writing to you instead of to Mr. Punes but there was no address on his card and there was on yours. Perhaps that was premeditation on his part? It goes anyway. Very cordially yours,". Russell (1860-1922, born Helen Louise Leonard in Clinton, Iowa) was an American light soprano who won acclaim in operettas by Gilbert & Sullivan and Jacques Offenbach. Known as much for her beauty as for her flamboyant life style, Russell first appeared on stage in the chorus of H. M. S. Pinafore in 1879. She made her first appearance on Broadway in 1880. By 1891, she was the star of the Lillian Russell Opera Company and was one of the most popular singing actresses in New York until her retirement in 1912. Lightly toned and creased. Random ink stains. White border is scuffed. Folded once and unfolded. Spine of letter is worn and has pinhole at horizontal fold. Otherwise in fine condition.
