LILLIE "AMERICAN LILY" LANGTRY - AUTOGRAPH NOTE SIGNED 1904 - HFSID 79819
Price: $450.00
LILLIE LANGTRY
She signed this autograph note of holiday wishes, on the back of her photo,
in 1904.
Photograph with ANS: "Lillie Langtry" on verso. Sepia, 3½x5¼. In
full: "Xmas 1904/Wishing You a Merry/Xmas and a Happy/New Year Millie
Edward/and/Lillie Langtry." Vaudeville singer and comedienne Lillie
Langtry was called "the American lily" to distinguish her from the 20 years
older and better known actress, Lillie Langtry "the Jersey Lily" (although
both women were English). To compound the confusion, both Lillies were married
to an Edward, although the "Jersey Lily" had divorced her husband of that name
in 1887. Confronted by lawyers for the Jersey Lily, the younger Lillie
eventually changed the spelling of her name to Lily Langtree. Fine
condition.
