Lina Basquette (1907-1994), a leading dancer in the Ziegfield Follies, starred in films of the silent era, including Cecil B. DeMille's The Godless Girl (1929). The film was based on the life of Queen Silver, known as a 20th-century child prodigy, feminist, and Socialist activist. Basquette was noted for her 75-year career in entertainment, which began during the silent film era. She was married nine times, beginning with movie mogul Sam Warner, and boasted of affairs with men including boxer Jack Dempsey and mobster Johnny Roselli. Hitler personally invited her to visit him in Berchtesgaden, where she claimed to have fended off his advances. Retired from acting after 1942, she became a prize-winning breeder of Great Danes.
