Wertmüller, born Arcangela Felice Assunta Job Wertmüller von Elgg Espanol von Brauchich in Rome, Italy in 1926, is an Italian film director and screenwritter with almost 30 directing credits and over 30 writing credits since 1963. Born to an aristocratic Swiss family, Wertmüller set aside dreams of becoming a lawyer when she entered the Academy of Theatre in Rome in 1947. After working in Maria Signorelli's Puppet Troupe, she made her directorial debut in 1963 with The Lizards. Her biggest hit came in 1976 with Seven Beauties, which earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Director (the first ever bestowed upon a woman) as well as a four-picture contract at Warner Brothers. Wertmüller was praised during her heyday for championing the underdog and her feminism in the United States but American critics eventually soured of her, and she returned to Europe to continue directing films. One of her late critical successess was Ciao Professore (1994). Her films almost invariably included actor and friend Giancarlo Giannini cast as a Chaplinesque loser. Lightly toned, otherwise in fine condition.
