LINCOLN STEFFENS and WALTER "DEATH VALLEY SCOTTY" SCOTT
Lincoln Steffens and "Death Valley Scotty" sign their names in ink on
a 7¼x4½ album leaf, with Scott dated his signature 1911. Extremely rare
signature from the Western conman!
Signature: "Lincoln Steffens" and, on verso, "Walter
Scott/Death Valley/Calif/Scottie/11-17-1911", 7¼x4½ album leaf. STEFFENS
(1866-1936) was a journalist and magazine editor who pioneered the
aggressive investigative style known as "muckraking", exposing corporate and
government corruption. Initially impressed by the Russian revolution, he
returned from a visit there in 1921 with the famous comment, "I have seen the
future, and it works." By the time he wrote his autobiography (1931), however,
Steffens was disillusioned with communism. SCOTT (1872-1954), known as
"Death Valley Scottie", was a former rider in Buffalo Cody's Wild West Show who
turned to prospecting for gold in the Death Valley of California and Nevada.
With the help of his millionaire backer, Albert Johnson, he built a
mansion in the desert, allegedly with gold mine profits. "Scottie's Castle"
remains a tourist attraction today. "Steffen" written (unknown hand) beneath
signature. Light stains at blank left margin and blank right edge on Steffen's
page, lightly soiled at upper left blank corner on Scott's page. Slightly
irregular left edge from removal from bound book. Light show through of ink.
Otherwise, fine condition.
