LINDA VILLARI
She writes from Florence, offering an article to an English
editor.
Autograph Letter signed: "Linda Villari", 2 pages (integral
leaf), 7¾x5. Florence [Italy], un-dated. To C. M. Yonge, in full:
"I fear that it is almost useless to send you any articles on
approbation; but living so far away, I venture to infringe literary etiquette
& send you a short sketch of the Siena fetes (Palio of Siena) without
waiting to know if you would care to see it. I should be glad to find an opening
for short sketches of Italian life & may mention that I am now writing
notices of Italian literature for the 'Academy' & other papers. My name too
has been before the public as author of 'In Change Unchanged' (Macmillan &
Co.) & 'In the Golden Shell' (Ibid.) I beg to enclose stamps in case of
rejection & a postcard addressed to myself [Item not included.]. Hoping
for the kindness of an early reply, believe me, dear Sir, Yours truly". Linda
Villari (née White, 1836-1915) wrote the two books she mentions in the
1870s. Her next published work would be On Tuscan Hills and Venetian
Waters (1885). She also translated into English writings of her husband,
historian Pasquale Villari, whose works included biographies of Machiavelli and
Savanarola. The Palio of Siena is a semi-annual horse race and festival dating
from medieval times. Light foxing. Slightly worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
