LINDLEY M. GARRISON
He signs a typed letter containing a brief biographic sketch of
himself.
Typed Letter signed: "Lindley M. Garrison", 1 page, 8¼x10¾. New
York, N.Y., 1925 May 12. On letterhead of Hornblower, Miller and Garrison to
A. Barclay Ulman, New York City. In full: "I am just in receipt of
your letter of May 8th in which a letter in my handwriting for your collection.
You state that you would very much appreciate a biographical sketch. Briefly
stated, my biography is as follows: Born at Camden, N.J., November 28, 1864;
Admitted to the Bar in the State of Pennsylvania, June, 1886, to the Bar of the
State of New Jersey, June, 1888, and to the Bar of the State of New York in
November, 1916; Served as Vice-Chancellor of the State of New Jersey from June,
1904, to March 5, 1913; As Secretary of War in the Cabinet of President Wilson
from March 5, 1913 to February 10, 1916. Since that time a practicing lawyer in
the State of New York and a member of the firm of Hornblower, Miller &
Garrison. The above is in my usual handwriting; signature, however, being the
only part thereof that is characteristic. Sincerely yours". Garrison
accurately summarizes his career but tactfully omits the fact that policy
differences with President Wilson led to his departure from the Cabinet.
During the war preparedness campaign of 1916, he had advocated more ambitious
military preparations that Wilson was ready to sanction. Garrison is having some
fun with the autograph seeker here, describing a dictated letter as "my usual
handwriting," but the ink signature is authentically Garrison's. Garrison died
in 1932. Mailing fold through middle initial. Lightly toned at edges. Otherwise,
fine condition.
