Lindy Boggs signed this letter, typed on her personalized stationery to a Texas school principal, in 1975. She was serving her third of 18 years as U. S. Representative from Louisiana's 2nd Congressional District when she signed this letter.
Typed letter signed "Lindy Boggs" in blue ink. 1 page, 8x10½, on Boggs' personalized stationery from the U. S. House of Representatives. March 7, 1975. Addressed to Ms. Jakie Lee Pruett, Principal of the Department of Special Education, Richwood-Clute, Texas. In full: "Dear Ms. Pruett: I appreciate your recent letter and am pleased to return the pictures, which I was happy to autograph for your classroom bulletin board. All best wishes. Sincerely." Corinne "Lindy" Claiborne Boggs (1916-2013) married Thomas Hale Boggs, Sr. (1914-1972) in 1938. The couple had three children, including TV news commentator Cokie Roberts. When Hale served as U.S. Congressman from Louisiana (1941-1943, 1947-1972), Lindy, who had played an active role in his campaigns, worked in his office and also chaired inaugural committees for JFK and LBJ. Her husband was House Majority Leader when he disappeared on a campaign flight in 1972. Lindy, who was elected to fill his seat that year, served nine terms (1973-1991) in the House. The first woman to preside over a national political convention (the Democratic Convention in 1976), she was also U.S. Ambassador to the Vatican from 1997 to 2001. Lightly toned and creased. Staple holes and paper clip impression in top left corner. Folded in half and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
