Lindy Boggs signed this letter, typed on her personalized stationery to a Texas teacher, in 1973. She was serving her first of 18 years as U. S. Representative from Louisiana's 2nd Congressional District that year.
Typed letter signed "Lindy Boggs". Black and red ink notations on verso in unknown hand. 1 page, 6x9, on Boggs' personalized stationery from the U. S. House of Representatives. May 16, 1973. Addressed to Mr. J. L. Pruett, Clute, Texas. In full: "Dear Mr. Pruett: I was very flattered indeed by your recent request, and I am most pleased forward [sic] an auto-graph for your special education class. My deep appreciation for your thoughtful interest, and my warmest wishes. Sincerely." Corinne "Lindy" Claiborne Boggs (1916-2013) married Thomas Hale Boggs, Sr. (1914-1972) in 1938. The couple had three children, including TV news commentator Cokie Roberts. When Hale served as U.S. Congressman from Louisiana (1941-1943, 1947-1972), Lindy, who had played an active role in his campaigns, worked in his office and also chaired inaugural committees for JFK and LBJ. Her husband was House Majority Leader when he disappeared on a campaign flight in 1972. Lindy, who was elected to fill his seat that year, served nine terms (1973-1991) in the House. The first woman to preside over a national political convention (the Democratic Convention in 1976), she was also U.S. Ambassador to the Vatican from 1997 to 2001. Lightly toned and creased. Folded twice and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
