LINUS PAULING, AVA HELEN PAULING, PAULINE GEBALLE and KARL
PRUSSION. Signatures: "Linus Pauling/22 February 1966",
"Pauline T. Geballe" and "Ava Helen Pauling"
on front and, on verso, "Karl Prussion/Jan. 26, 1966/Portland,
Oregan. (sic)", 6¾x9¼, front and verso. Affixed at lower margin of Pauling's
signature page is a magazine photograph, b/w, 2x3¾, and a magazine article
headed: "Pauling is First and Only Person to Win Two Nobel Prizes Alone".
Affixed at lower margin of verso is a newspaper article headed: "Former
Counterspy Says Communist in Congress". The article includes a b/w photograph,
¾x1¼, of Prussion. LINUS PAULING (1901-1994) was the only winner of
two unshared Nobel Prizes. He won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in
1954 for his research on the nature of the chemical bond holding molecules
together and its use in understanding the structure of complex substances such
as protein and antibodies. After the development of the atomic bomb, Pauling
campaigned against nuclear weapons. He won the 1962 Nobel Peace Prize for
his efforts. AVA HELEN PAULING (1903-1981) was a lifelong liberal and
activist who, after WWII, steered her husband toward the peace
movement, for which he would spend half of his time. The couple, who
married on June 17, 1923, had four children and had been wed for 58 years
at the time of her death. Ava Helen, like her husband, traveled the world,
lecturing on peace and human rights. When asked about his greatest discovery,
Linus Pauling would always reply, "My wife." Although we were unable to find
information on PAULINE GEBALLE, the Ava Helen and Linus Pauling Papers
has a record of correspondence from her in 1956, 1963 and 1966, the year this
autograph was signed. It is not known if she signed this autograph at the
same time as the Paulings. KARL PRUSSION, the son of a Communist, was
named for Karl Marx and spent some 26 years as a member of the Communist
Party. According to Prussion, he was a counter-spy for the FBI for 12
years (1947-1959), although J. Edgar Hoover put that figure at nine years.
Prussion, who wrote several pamphlets and books and recorded an album, Inside
A Communist Cell (1961), tried to commit suicide in 1965, the year before he
signed this autograph, claiming he was the target of Communist assassins.
Worthy of further research. Lightly creased. Light show through of
writing. Ink page numbers (unknown hand) at lower corners. Lower right blank
corner torn away, irregular right edge with binding nicks from removal from
