LINUS PAULING
The Nobel Peace Prize-winning scientist declines to participate in a discussion due to his busy schedule
Typed Letter signed: "Linus Pauling", 1 page, 6x9. Santa Barbara, California, 21 August 1964. On letterhead of the Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions. To "Miss Goldberg" JoAnn Goldberg of Metropolitan Broadcasting, New York. In full: "I am sorry that my answer to your letter has been delayed because of my absence from Pasadena and my preoccupation with the job moving to Santa Barbara. I am interested to learn about your plans for a program on Man and Society. I feel, however, that I would not be very well qualified to take part in a discussion, as you have described it, and my circumstances also are such as to make it difficult for me to plan to come to New York. Sincerely yours". Linus Pauling (1901-1994) earned the Nobel Prize in Chemistry (1954) for his research into the nature of chemical bonding and its application to the structure of complex substances. In 1962, he received the Nobel Peace Prize for his campaign against nuclear testing. (Even though he had done military research during World War II, Pauling became an increasingly vocal critic of the arms race.) In 1962, he demonstrated outside the White House, then dined that evening with President and Mrs. Kennedy. Normal mailing folds. Fine condition.
