LINUS PAULING. Typed Letter signed: "Linus Pauling", 1p, 8½x11. On letterhead of Linus Pauling Institute of Science and Medicine. Menlo Park, California, 1980 August 29. To Chong Chi Tom, New York, N.Y. In full: "In answer to your letter, I must tell you first that I have not made a study of nuclear reactor technology. It is my understanding, however, that the alloy used as cladding has to be carefully selected with respect to its reactivity with neutrons, and that the zirconium alloy seems to be the best one known. As to your other question, no one knows yet whether or not fusion energy would be feasible, nor whether the induced radioactivity, such as that of carbon 14, would be such as to make it unwise to build nuclear fusion power plants. Sincerely." Pauling (1901-1994) earned the Nobel Prize in Chemistry (1954) for his research into the nature of chemical bonding and its application to the structure of complex substances. In 1962, he received the Nobel Peace Prize for his campaign against nuclear testing. (Even though he had done military research during World War II, Pauling became an increasingly vocal critic of the arms race.) In 1962, he demonstrated outside the White House, then dined that evening with President and Mrs. Kennedy. Two typed words are smudged but readable. Fine condition.
