Price: $320.00
LION FEUCHTWANGER. TLS: "Lion Feuchtwanger", 1p, 8½x11. Pacific Palisades, Calif., 1955 November
7. To Mr. Edelman. In full: "I thank you very much for your letter
of November 3 rd. The greater part of your letter to the Bulletin of the Atomic
Scientists was known to me from your manuscript. You are right I do not like your
thesis 'that the positing of an amoral cosmos tends to pave the way for immoral
relations between man and man.' In the last analysis, however, I agree with you
'that an optimistically tinted agnostic view is the most logical -- most
conducive to progress.' By the way your formultation is
excellent. I sometimes refer to my heroes (sic) positive skepticism. With
best wishes and regards." One cross out in his hand. Typed
postscript: "I return enclosed copy of your letter to the Bulletin of Atomic
Scientists." Copy not included. In 1940, when Feuchtwanger came to America
to escape the Nazis, he was the most internationally read German novelist. In
the year of this letter, he published Raquel, the Jewess of Toledo, a
novel addressing racism and intolerance. Lightly creased. Chipped at upper right
blank edge. Fine condition.
