Autograph Letter signed: "Lionel Brough", 1 page, 4x6.
South Lambeth [London, England], 1892 February 15. On Percy Villa
letterhead, written to E.B [Illegible], Esquire. English stage actor and
comedian Lionel Brough (1836-1909) was born in Pontypool, Wales. One of the
leading comic actors in London during the 1870's and 1880's, he was also
well known for playing Shakespearian roles. One of his most celebrated roles was
as Tony Lumpkin in Oliver Goldsmith's
She Stoops to Conquer which he performed at the St. James Theatre
in London. Brough also performed in several successful operettas
including La vie parisienne, despite not having any formal musical
training. He died at Percy Villa in South Lambeth, where he wrote this letter.
One horizontal fold. Lightly worn. Light foxing. Otherwise, fine
condition.
