LIONEL HAMPTON
Hampton signs a 7½x8 paper for George Sanders, signing "Best of
Luck"
Autograph note signed: "Best of Luck/George/Lionel/Hampton/George
The King of The Records", 7½x8, irregularly cut. Captioned magazine
photograph, b/w, 1½x1½, affixed at right margin. Portion of unrelated writing,
photograph and caption on verso. George was radio personality George Sanders.
Lionel Leo Hampton (1908-2002), the first jazz vibraphonist, began
his career as a drummer. Louis Armstrong encouraged him to try the
vibraphone, used by NBC radio to announce intermissions. Their 1930
recording of "Memories of You" forever associated Hampton with the
instrument, although he was also an accomplished piano player. In 1940,
Hampton formed his own band, which became the first Black band to tour the
racially segregated South with a white singer (1950). Slightly creased. Minor
show through of writing on verso touches two words in first line of writing,
rectangular shading touches "Georg" in last line. Ink number (unknown hand) at
lower right corner. Irregular left edge from removal from bound book. Overall,
fine condition.
