LIONEL HAMPTON
Vibraphonist jazz musician signs name in black ink
Autograph sentiment signed: "Lionel/ Hampton/ Best wishes" in
black ink. 1 page, 5x4½. Lionel Leo Hampton (1908-2002), the first
jazz vibraphonist, began his career as a drummer. Louis Armstrong
encouraged him to try the vibraphone, used by NBC radio to announce

Hampton with the instrument, although he was also an accomplished piano
player. In 1940, Hampton formed his own band, which became the first Black band
to tour the racially segregated South with a white singer (1950). Left bottom
corner creased. Very toned. Light surface creases. Ink notes on verso in unknown
hand. Otherwise, fine condition.
