LIONEL HAMPTON. Photograph inscribed and signed: "Good
Luck/Burt/Lionel/Hampton". B/w, 8x10 overall, image 7x8¾ (one surface).
Lionel Hampton Enterprises publicity photograph. Captioned at lower
margin: "The Exciting LIONEL HAMPTON". Hampton and his band are pictured in
front of a sign that reads: "Goodwill Ambassador/Lionel Hampton". Hampton was
asked by President Dwight D. Eisenhower to serve as a goodwill ambassador for
the U.S. Hampton and his band made a number of tours to Europe, Africa, the
Middle East and the Far East in that capacity, generating a large international
following. Lionel Leo Hampton (1908-2002), the first jazz vibraphonist,
began his career as a drummer. Louis Armstrong encouraged him to try the
vibraphone, used by NBC radio to announce intermissions. Their 1930
recording of "Memories of You" forever associated Hampton with the
instrument, although he was also an accomplished piano player. In 1940,
Hampton formed his own band, which became the first Black band to tour the
racially segregated South with a white singer (1950). Lightly creased at blank
margins and corners. Minor surface creases and scratches (most not evident head
on). Overall, fine condition.
