Price: $280.00
LIONEL HAMPTON. Photograph inscribed and signed: "Good Luck
Joan/Lionel Hampton". B/w, 10x8 overall, image 9x6¾ (one surface).
Publicity photograph for "Lionel Hampton's/One Night Stand & Jazz
Circle/An Avco Embassy Television Presentation". ©1975, Bethton Productions,
Inc. Captioned at lower margin. Lionel Leo Hampton (1908-2002), the first
jazz vibraphonist, began his career as a drummer. Louis Armstrong
encouraged him to try the vibraphone, used by NBC radio to announce
intermissions. Their 1930 recording of "Memories of You" forever associated
Hampton with the instrument, although he was also an accomplished piano
player. In 1940, Hampton formed his own band, which became the first Black band
to tour the racially segregated South with a white singer (1950). Lightly
creased at blank margins and corners, light balck marks at upper and lower right
edges. Minor surface creases and scratches (most not evident head on). Overall,
fine condition.
